Living Environment

  • This course explores the basic functions of living things and how they interact with the world around them, including topics such as Cells, Body Systems, Life Processes, Genetics, Evolution, and Ecology. This course will cover everything necessary to pass the Regents Living Environment Exam and beyond. This course presents current knowledge in biology using the latest New York State Curriculum. The material covered will help you better understand yourself and the world around you. The major topics will be human biology, including anatomy and physiology, reproduction and development, genetics, change of organisms over time, and ecology. 

In order to attain a Regents High School diploma.  Living Environment is a New York State required course.

  • Each student must:
  1. Pass the class.
  2. Acquire 1,200 minutes of laboratory time
    1. Relationships and Biodiversity
    2. Making Connections
    3. The Beaks of Finches
    4. Diffusion Through a Membrane
    1. The following four labs must be included as part of the 1,200 minutes

*Note: Students will be tested on this content in Part “D” of the Regents exam.

3. Pass the Regents exam at the end of the year.

 

Materials needed for class

Pencil 

Pen (Do not use red or green ink)

1- pack of lined 3x5 index cards 

1- folder  (To carry the material we are currently studying)

1- binder (To save the material we have completed.  We will refer back to this material  in order 

     to study for the final exam.  These materials may be kept at home or in the classroom) 

 

Quarterly grades are determined as follows

Homework-----------------------30%

Tests/quizzes---------------------30%

Laboratory Reports-------------30%

Class Participation--------------10%

*Note: Each quarter consists of two five week grading periods.  All work must be 

completed within its assigned five week period in order to be graded.

 

Final grade for Regents Living Environment will be determined as follows.

1st quarter:-----------------------20%

2nd quarter:----------------------20%

3rd quarter:-----------------------20%

4th quarter:-----------------------20%

Regents LE exam:---------------20%

 

Late classwork/homework

  1. Assignments are expected to be completed on their due date/time. If there are extenuating circumstances please let me know prior to the due date and I will give you an extension.
  2. Late assignments will be graded as follows.
    1. One day late-75%
    2. Two days late-50%
    3. Three days late-25%
    4. > Three days late- 0%

Late labs

  1. Labs are expected to be completed on their due date/time. If there are extenuating circumstances please let me know prior to the due date and I will give you an extension.
  2. Late labs will be graded as follows.
    1. One day late-75% ---------full lab minutes.
    2. Two days late-50% --------full lab minutes.
    3. Three days late-25% ------full lab minutes.
    4. > Three days late-0% -----full lab minutes.

 

Absences

  1. If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up missing assignments. Look to Google Classroom for assignments.
  2. If you are absent on the day of a test or quiz.  
  1. You must make arrangement with Ms. Franklin on the day you return. Together we will determine a day and time for your missed test or quiz to be completed.
 

Classroom expectations

  1. Treat everyone with respect.
  2. Use equipment properly.
  3. Follow all safety rules.
