Physical education is an integral part of the school curriculum. The major objective is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, abilities, behaviors, and confidence to be physically active throughout their lifetime.
There are multiple Physical Education courses that I teach at Maritime.
General Physical Education is primarily devoted to team sports and skill development with an emphasis placed on fitness and personal wellness. There is also time spent on some individual/lifetime activities and sports that will contribute to the cadets’ lifelong fitness and overall wellness. Classes are co-ed. A change of clothes is required in order to participate.
Personal Fitness Training is for eleventh and twelfth grade cadets and blends non-sport related fitness, nutrition, and social, mental, and emotional health. The primary goal of the course is to give the cadets the tools to take ownership of their own health over the course of their life. The responsibility shifts from the teacher to the cadet as they develop their own routines for a healthy life.
Common core standards are aimed at improving English language arts and mathematics and here at Maritime, we have integrated Common Core standards into the Physical Education curricula. We are assigning health related articles as homework once a month and the students will have a week to complete them.
A student will earn .5 credits upon successful completion of this course. Four years of PE is required and a minimum of 2 credits earned is needed for graduation
