Participation in Government Discussion Question 4

Students should understand that voting is the pivotal form of political participation. Other forms include joining a political organization, contributing money, and doing volunteer work in a political campaign. Students should also understand that people who do not vote may do so as a form of political protest. Students should be able to assess the pros and cons of different forms of participation and nonparticipation. Students should understand the basic mechanisms of the United States electoral and representational system, such as single-member districts, winner-take-all elections, and the electoral college.
